We have found our day of service location for the Cusco and the Sacred Valley 2016 retreat! Our participants will be spending 8 hours volunteering at Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary. All of the animals at the sanctuary are there because they were illegally trafficked, used illegally, or abused. Many of the exotic birds and even one of the large cats were even rescued from a night club. The sanctuary is home to 8 condors, a toucan, many big cats, llamas, tortoises, and now a Spectacled Bear.

Our participants will be planting 50 trees purchased from the local community neighboring the sanctuary to prevent flooding, helping unload cement and supplies for a new bear habitat, and feeding the animals that the sanctuary currently is home to.

Cochahuasi is currently home to a Spectacled Bear cub, and it is the first of it’s kind at the sanctuary. Because of this, they are in the process of building it a new habitat on the grounds. This habitat will have a pool for the bear, as well as ample space for it to feel comfortable in it’s new home. We are asking for donations for Ccochahuasi for supplies to help build this habitat. We have made the goal to raise the money for 100 bags of cement, at $7.50 a bag. Please sponsor as many or few bags as you like, all donations are welcome. If you’d like to sponsor a full truck of white sand, which is used to mix with the cement, 2 full truck loads are needed. Each truck costs 450 soles, which translates to approximately $150 USD.  If you’d like to sponsor either of those, your donations are welcome. We would like ot get as close as possible to our goal of 100 bags of cement and  believe this to be a reasonable goal, and very important to the sanctuary, as they are privately funded and need donations to be able to continue to help these animals. If you would like to donate or sponsor a bag of cement, please donate here:

More about Cochahuasi from their web site:

We, at CCOCHAHUASI ANIMAL SANCTUARY (CAS) , are a family run private organization, dedicated to rescuing and looking after animals which have suffered mistreatment of any kind from former owners or evil poachers or illegal hunters whom commercialize protected species. These rescued animals are put under the care of C.A.S by The forest Rangers, a dependency of The National Police or by the National Government.

Since CAS was stablished in 2007 we have been sheltering wild species, many of which are endangered. One of the species at risk of extinction is The Andean Condor, it deserves special consideration, because its population has been seriously decimated, and efforts to encourage its reproduction in captivity and later releasing the young Condors. It’s our focus to illustrate our visitors on the factors that are causing this species to nearly disappear as a consequence of the action of man. The feathers are of great value for some craftsmen who later sell them as souvenirs for tourists, this activity stimulates the illegal hunting for this magnificent birds.
