20 Jan PWS Mexico Teens Will Work with Centro Ecológico Akumal, and So Can You!
Welcome back to Let’s Volunteer! with Katie. It’s been a week since our last post, so hopefully your heads and hearts are ready for the next cause. Last week we focused on the kittens and puppies at Coco’s Animal Welfare, and this week we focus on another organization devoted to the safety of animals:
The mission of CEA is to produce and promote strategies for ecosystem management in Akumal through research, education and outreach for sustainability in the Mexican Caribbean. The PWS teens are helping them make this happen! For two days of the retreat, our teens will be volunteering with the organization’s Turtle Conservation Program. At the end of these two days, the teens will come to have an understanding and appreciation for aspects of the field work conducted at the Centro Ecologico Akumal, the importance of monitoring and collecting data and witnessing firsthand the impact humans have on our beaches.
They specifically will be working on learning how to conduct beach zoning for the turtle program, collecting trash and marine waste on Akumal beaches, categorizing the trash, learning the dangers it has on turtles and marine life, and learning why turtle identification is an important activity. They will also learn how to conduct the monitoring and analysis themselves through picture ID database. These are all fantastic skills and a wonderful way to give back to the Mexican Riviera that is so kindly hosting us.
We are trying to donate 2 underwater GoPros to Centro Ecológico Akumal, and need your help. If everyone contributes even just $10, we will reach our goal in as little as a few minutes. Right now, we are halfway to our goal ($400), and would love to reach it before the retreat starts. Anything helps!
