Our Philosophy: Co-Creating Temporary Learning Communities
At Project World School, every retreat is more than just a trip — it’s the creation of a living, breathing learning community.
A learning community is a group of people who share common interests, values, and emotions, and who actively learn with and from each other. It’s collaborative, interdisciplinary, and deeply human.
But ours are unique. They are co-created — built intentionally by every participant — and temporary by design. For a short, intense moment in time, we come together in one place, with one shared purpose: to live, learn, and grow alongside each other. Then, like a rare constellation, the moment passes. The physical gathering ends, but the connections, insights, and personal transformations remain for a lifetime.
Why Temporary Matters
Temporary communities, like those found at Burning Man or other intentional gatherings, hold a special kind of magic. They rely on the energy, openness, and commitment of their participants. Everyone contributes. Everyone shapes the experience.
In our retreats, the bonds formed through shared adventures, conversations, and challenges are powerful precisely because they are fleeting. We pour ourselves into the moment — and that intensity transforms the way we see the world.
Social Learning at the Core
We are firm believers in social learning. When people experience something together — whether it’s exploring a historic site, cooking a local dish, or hiking through a rainforest — conversations flow naturally. Knowledge, stories, and perspectives are exchanged.
These shared experiences go far beyond “natural learning.” They become meaningful social activities that help participants integrate new insights, foster empathy, and expand their worldview.

- Exploring history through the stories, art, and traditions of the community
