What is the Project World School Family Summit, 2017?
Simple: An immersive hands-on worldschooling experience with other like-minded families. Come together with purpose, empowered to create community, connect, explore and share our experiences, successes and challenges.
We are a community of worldschoolers.
During the summit we celebrate learning from the world around us, share techniques, strategies and resources, learn from our community and create new friendships. Participate in sessions exploring issues surrounding education, travel, family & wellness. Take a hands-on workshop or share your goods, products and services during the worldschooling international – bazaar. You are invited to share, connect and learn.
You are cordially invited to the second annual worldschooling gathering taking place in Mérida, Mexico!
Mérida is the home of beautiful folkloric dancers, refreshing cenotes, and festivities every night. It is a cultural hub, boasting 60% of it’s population coming from Mayan descent; this town is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the Mayan history and Mexican culture. Only 1 hour from the infamous Chichén Itzá and 3 hours from Cancún, Mérida is our top choice of location for worldschooling families to come together to learn and form a community.
What is the Project World School Family Summit?
The 2017 Project World School Family Summit combines the principles of a travel and education conference with the spirit of a family outing, offering a day-camp for the kids with a twist of cultural travel immersion. We are coming together to create community and learn about the culture around us and ourselves.
During the conference you can expect presentations, workshops and roundtables focusing on all aspects of:
Health & Wellness
This year, we will also offer a cultural immersion track including:
Mexican vegetarian cooking
All age language classes
Mexican history & culture lecture
Aztec & Mayan dancing
In addition to the invited presenters (TBA), many of the workshops and presentations will come from the talent and passions from within our worldschooling community. We would love to benefit from your passion. Please be sure to share your ideas for workshop or talk presentation when you fill out the Family Summit Application.
Since the Spanish conquest, Mérida has been the cultural capital of the entire Yucatán Peninsula. It is a town steeped in colonial history, with narrow streets, broad central plazas and the region’s best museums. Being centrally located, Mérida is a practical hub to explore numerous ruin sites and ecological wonders. Mayan culture is also still evident in Mérida ‘s daily life and in the many colorful festivals celebrated here. In recent years, Mérida has seen, and continues to undergo, an explosion of art and culture. And there are also opportunities to scale mysterious pyramids, bushwhack through jungles, and cool off in freshwater cenote pools the way the ancients did. Many charters fly into Mérida or you can take a four-hour bus ride from Cancun or rent a car. There are also two highways connecting Cancun and Mérida plus many roads winding their way through the jungle from Tulum.
The Second Annual Project World School Family Summit will be held at Hotel Los Aluxes located at: Calle 60 No. 444 entre 49 y 51, Centro, CP 97000, Mérida , Yucatán, Mexico.
The hotel is located just 6 blocks from downtown (verified by our location manager, who walked from Gran Plaza to Hotel Los Aluxes).
All activities, opening and closing ceremonies, conference talks and workshops and kids clubs will take place at Hotel Los Aluxes. You can stay at the hotel or at a surrounding location.
Surrounding the Hotel:
There are nightly cultural events taking place in downtown Mérida that summit participants can attend for free. Project World School Summit organizers will arrange group walking trips, print out schedules and maps available to all summit participants. All excursions will leave fromHotel Los Aluxes for the evening events. Finally, the hotel is within walking distance to the downtown “mercado”.
Parque de las Americas is 12 blocks away from Hotel Los Aluxes, well within walking distance or a short bus ride. The park offers daily activities in addition to a wonderful children’s playground, and nightly zumba classes and aerobics classes.
There are several other hostels and hotels close to downtown that run from $10-$15 that families could stay at. Our location manager stayed at Hostal Nomadas, Mérida and recommends it as a lower cost basic hotel. Of course there are upper end hotels like the Hyatt and Holiday Inn that run from $80-$120 and others in the downtown area. Please do your own research.
If you opt to stay at a different hotel other than Hotel Los Aluxes, there is free parking offered at the hotel and the buffets and restaurants are open to all. However, the hotel pool will be off limits to non-staying hotel guests.
Children 0-4 years old & infants are not charged for buffet
Buffet for children 5-11 years old, food is discounted 20%;
(approximately $5.55 each)
We will add a link to the schedule in February / March of 2017. Please check the Facebook page often for updates and announcements.
Katie Mitchell, our 2016 Kid’s Camp Coordinator will be returning in 2017 to run another kids camp.
So what will this kids camp look like?
Last year, we hosted the camp in Puerto Morelos’ outdoor plaza, and spent the days playing at the beach and under the sun. This year, we are in Mérida , Mexico, further inland in the Peninsula. The kids camp is projected to be over three times as large as the year before, and we are very excited for this! The camp will be held in Mérida at Hotel Los Aluxes and will have both indoor and outdoor facilities and activities planned for the various ages of worldschoolers joining us. There will be a heavy focus on culture and the area we are in. The crafts will focus on the history of the Yucatán and there will be dance workshops in Mayan, Aztec, and Folkloric dance available for the whole family!
If you have a teen coming to the summit, please consider volunteering to be a Kid’s Camp staffer. Interested? Please send us an email here.
This is the perfect opportunity for your worldschooling child to be able to form a strong knit community with other worldschooling children while you do the same with the adults in the sessions. Children have come out of this program with deep, lasting friendships from the 3 days of play and adventure together in this environment.
